Still Life with Apple Painting by Rhode Island Artist Charles C. Clear III

Still Life with Apple Painting
5″ x 7″, Oil on Canvas, 2020
by Charles C. Clear III

This simple, small quick study of a single apple was painted in January of 2020. At that time I had just completed my “Portrait of Gabrielle Cot” for the Fakes & Forgeries Show at Spring Bull Gallery in Newport and I was looking for something easy to paint before I started my next commission. An apple seemed like an obvious choice. I’d never painted one before and I thought it would be easy. For the most part it was but to my surprise there’s a lot more to an apple than meets the eye. There are nuances of color and subtle blends that require a delicate touch. To make the apple stand out I painted a dark background with a few splashes of warm copper.

The Still Life with Apple Painting was quickly acquired by a collector in South County Rhode Island.
