Serengeti Animal Mural, 12′ x 5′, 1999
Pediatric Wing of South Shore Medical Center, Norwell, MA
by Charles C. Clear III and Bonnie Lee Turner
Titled ‘Serengeti’, this detailed animal mural is located in the Pediatric waiting area of the South Shore Medical Center in Norwell, Massachusetts. Painted to look like a large picture window, the plains of the Serengeti come alive with friendly wild animals. Artificial plants were added along the bottom to enhance the illusion, and also to protect the mural from the tiny hands of budding artists.
The ‘Serengeti’ mural was created in the studio on heavyweight canvas and then installed on site by professional paper hangers. When a mural is painted on canvas and then attached to the wall like wallpaper, this is a technique known as marouflaging. Maouflaging murals is a great option for very busy Hospital and Health Care environments. With installation taking only an hour or two, a remarkably detailed mural can appear in the blink of an eye – and will be virtually indistinguishable from a mural painted right on the wall!
