Fearless Girl Mural, 22′ x 25′, 2021
Beacon Charter High School, Woonsocket, RI
by Charles C. Clear III and Bonnie Lee Turner
In August 2021, I had the privilege of creating Profiles in Courage, a 22′ x 25′ mural located on the exterior of Beacon Charter High School for the Arts, situated at 320 Main Street in Woonsocket. This high-profile mural was commissioned after Beacon Charter School issued a Call to Artists in early 2021. After submitting proposals alongside other talented artists, I was selected by a distinguished committee including the School’s Superintendent, Board of Directors, and the Mayor of Woonsocket.
The mural occupies a prime spot on the school’s third and fourth floors, directly across from the iconic Stadium Theater in downtown Woonsocket. Positioned in a highly visible area, the wall had frequently been subject to graffiti, and the school sought a mural that would not only deter vandalism but also uplift the surrounding neighborhood. The goal was to create a vibrant, thoughtful piece that would reflect the school’s diverse student body, combat urban blight, and serve as a positive force for students, residents, and local businesses alike. As the project description stated, “The mural will have a strong impact on the neighborhood,” and it was essential that the final artwork be both well-executed and widely embraced.
The first step in the process was designing a mural that would meet the school’s vision. After presenting a variety of design concepts, one particular proposal stood out to the committee, earning unanimous approval.
The mural features a well larger than life size portrait of a confident, self-assured young woman standing tall, her hands on her hips, symbolizing empowerment and readiness to face the future. Behind her, three silhouetted profiles of students represent the diverse voices of the school community, while radiating beams evoke the image of a lighthouse — a beacon of guidance and hope. The background incorporates Beacon Charter School’s colors: Orange, Blue, Gray, and Navy Blue, unifying the design with the school’s identity.
Over the course of two weeks, we transformed a graffiti-covered brick wall into a stunning visual statement. The mural now stands as a testament to the courage, diversity, and hope that define the students of Beacon Charter High School. Not only does it enhance the aesthetic of the area, but it also serves as a deterrent to graffiti and a new cherished landmark for the city.
Since its completion, Profiles in Courage has received widespread acclaim from the community, including positive press coverage and a strong presence on social media. It has truly become a vibrant symbol of strength and unity in Woonsocket.
If you’re interested in commissioning a custom mural for your building or space, I’d be thrilled to bring your vision to life. Let’s make your wall a work of art!
