Oyster Harbors in Osterville, Massachusetts is a gated island community on the southern coast of Cape Cod. It’s located in Osterville, a charming village in the Town of Barnstable, with Hyannis just to the East and Mashpee to the West.
In 2018 I had business at a home in Oyster Harbors. It’s a place I had never visited before. Once you pass the marina and the guards at the gate, it’s readily apparent that the island is filled with some very wealthy people and some very expensive properties.
The home that I visited in Oyster Harbors was impressive, but the view from the backyard was simply spectacular! Just off shore is Dead Neck Island – a sizable tree-covered barrier breach that serves as a wildlife sanctuary. Off in the distance you can see the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Oak Bluffs, in the northeast corner of the Vineyard, is roughly just 12 miles or so offshore. This gorgeous view is framed by tall trees nestled in a shady grove atop a hill. Below is an outdoor patio with white furniture, the perfect spot to drink your morning coffee, or have lunch, or sip your Gautier Cognac from 1762 and watch the sailboats catch the orange glow of the setting sun.
I was captivated by the view from this backyard in Oyster Harbors, but I I didn’t have the opportunity to paint on site. So I paid close attention to every detail of the changing light, and took several pictures as a reminder of the beauty that I had witnessed. I painted the scene in my Studio soon after my visit. It’s a simple painting, but it does capture the look and feel of this little slice of paradise.
