Trompe l’oeil Door Mural
Office of Dr. Lena D Karkalas DDS, Providence, Rhode Island
by Charles C. Clear III and Bonnie Lee Turner
This trompe l’oeil Door Mural was painted in the waiting room of Dr. Lena Karkalas‘ cosmetic dentist’s office in Providence, Rhode Island. The Mural, painted on the back of the waiting room door, features a sun-drenched patio adorned with flowers. It’s a very tranquil scene that comes as a pleasant surprise to first time visitors to the office, who only notice the mural after they close the door behind them.
The Mural painted on the door is pleasing to the eye, and serves to brighten and enlarge an otherwise small waiting area. It feels like you are looking through a glass paned door and could walk right out onto this gorgeous outdoor patio.
You wouldn’t know it to look at it now, but this metal door was very industrial looking when we first saw it. Right at eye level there is a square foot glass window surrounded by a protruding metal border with exposed screws or rivets. If you look closely at the picture you can still see a shadow of the border in the sky above the magenta rhododendrons. The challenge was to minimize the negative effect of these industrial looking features by not only covering this part but also drawing the eye away to other elements. The mural was carefully composed to do just that. The eye dances and moves around the mural, and one can hardly notice the window with the metal frame.
We haven’t had the opportunity to paint too many Door Murals, but we would like to paint more. To commission an eye-catching attention-getting Door Mural for your Dentist’s Office, Hospital, Health care facility, contact me today!
